An investment portfolio is the full collection of financial assets you own—stocks, bonds, funds, cash, and any other securities held through a brokerage or investment account. Your portfolio as a whole determines your overall risk exposure, expected returns, and progress toward financial goals.

Thinking at the portfolio level, rather than asset by asset, is a key mindset shift for serious investors. A single stock might be very risky in isolation, but if it is a small position within a well-diversified portfolio, its effect on your total wealth is limited. Asset allocation and diversification are the two main levers for shaping a portfolio's overall risk and return profile.

Portfolio management involves regular monitoring and rebalancing—periodically adjusting positions to maintain your intended asset allocation as markets shift the relative values of your holdings.
